From every £1 spent on lottery tickets 28 pence goes to lottery good causes.
In 1994 the first year of the National Lottery, £267 million of lottery money was raised for good causes – The arts, sport, heritage, and the millennium projects and £154 million went to charity.
Since 1994 £23 billion has been raised for Lottery Good Causes.
The National Lottery is generating over £25 million per week for Good Causes.
For every £1 that the public spends on lottery tickets:
50 pence is paid out to the prize winners.
28 pence goes to the lottery good causes.
12 pence goes to the Government in Lottery Duty.
5 pence is retained by the Lottery operator to meet costs and returns to shareholders
5 pence is paid to National Lottery retailers for selling tickets.
The 28 pence from every £1 spent is divided up between various Lottery Good Causes.
Initially when the Lottery started five good causes were identified as the arts, charities, sports, heritage and the Millennium projects.
In 1988, environment, education and health were added as an additional good cause.
In 2005 Lottery support for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games became a good cause.
At the end of 2006 the Big Lottery Fund took over from the Millennium Commission,
The money for good causes is distributed as follows:
50% to The Big Lottery Fund (Charities, Health, Education & the environment)
16.67% to Sports
16.67% to Arts
16.67% to Heritage
These figures are the average breakdown based on the 2 nd lottery licence from January 2002 to January 2009.
Camelot won the 1st, 2nd and 3rd lottery licences and will now run the lottery until at least 2019.
Camelot's profit is between 0.3% and 0.5% but is currently linked to performance and determined by how much is raised for Lottery Good Causes.
This performance related profit incentive was introduced by the regulator The National Lottery Commission
